Beat the Heat
It's forecast to hit around 103°F in Philadelphia today, with a heat index near 111°F — the city is under a Heat Health Emergency. Here are the best air-conditioned, indoor things to do in Philly and the suburbs while the sun does its worst. Save the fireworks and parades for the cooler evening.
Stay safe in the heat
Philadelphia has declared a Heat Health Emergency from Wed, July 1 (11 a.m.) through Sat, July 4 (8 p.m.). Drink water, stay indoors during the hottest hours (roughly 11 a.m.–6 p.m.), check on older neighbors, and never leave kids or pets in a car.

National Constitution Center
Live music, family programs and hands-on activities in a huge, cool atrium — plus the new America's Founding gallery. The single best free, air-conditioned anchor right on Independence Mall.
ICA at Penn
The Institute of Contemporary Art at Penn — bold, boundary-pushing exhibitions in a sleek, chilled gallery. Free every day, and a Free Museum Day pick for the 4th.
Stenton
A 1730s Georgian mansion opening free for the 250th. Indoor guided tours through cool, shaded historic rooms — a quieter escape away from the crowds.
The blockbuster museums
Big, heavily air-conditioned, and easy to spend a whole afternoon in. All open Thursday — buy timed tickets online first.
The Franklin Institute
Hands-on science across three cool floors — the giant walk-through heart, sports physics, a planetarium and rotating blockbuster exhibits. Hours of AC and easily a half-day.
Please Touch Museum
An indoor playground for ages 1–7 inside grand, chilled Memorial Hall — a supermarket, river tunnels, a carousel and endless climb-and-play. The go-to AC refuge for families with little ones.
Academy of Natural Sciences
Dinosaur skeletons, dioramas of the world's wildlife, and a warm (but the building's cold) live butterfly house. Compact, cool and kid-perfect on the Parkway.
Philadelphia Museum of Art
World-class galleries, the armor hall, and yes — the "Rocky steps" (climb those after sunset, not now). Vast and cool inside. Note it closes at 5 on Thursdays.
The Barnes Foundation
One of the world's great Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collections — Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse — hung salon-style in dim, quiet, perfectly climate-controlled rooms.
Penn Museum
A monumental Egyptian sphinx, mummies, and antiquities from around the globe, in cool stone galleries on Penn's campus. Underrated and rarely crowded.
History & the 250th — indoors
Lean into the semiquincentennial without frying on the Mall. Cool galleries, all near Independence Hall.
Museum of the American Revolution
Immersive galleries on the founding, with Washington's actual field tent as the finale. The perfect air-conditioned way to mark the 250th on a brutal day.
Independence Seaport Museum
Maritime galleries on the Delaware waterfront with historic ships to board. Cool inside, a breeze off the river, and a change of pace from Old City.
African American Museum in Philadelphia
The first major museum built by a U.S. city to interpret African American history and culture — powerful, cool galleries a block from the Mall.
Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History
The story of Jewish life in America right on Independence Mall — modern, airy, and thoroughly air-conditioned.
Quirky, and sometimes free
Smaller, weirder, wonderful — and a couple cost nothing.
Wagner Free Institute of Science
A perfectly preserved Victorian natural-history museum — thousands of specimens in original wooden cases. Always free, delightfully odd, and blissfully cool.
Mütter Museum
Philadelphia's famous museum of medical history and curiosities — not for the squeamish, endlessly fascinating, and cold inside. Book ahead; it's small.
Parkway Central Library
The grand main branch of the Free Library — free, quiet, air-conditioned, with exhibits and a rooftop café. Libraries double as official cooling centers during the emergency.
Eat, shop & chill
When you just want cold air, a cold drink, and no agenda.
Reading Terminal Market
100+ vendors under one air-conditioned roof — cheesesteaks, Amish soft pretzels, ice cream, DiNic's roast pork. The classic cool Philly lunch. Go early; it's busy.
King of Prussia Mall
One of the largest malls in the country — 450+ stores across two connected buildings, all fully air-conditioned. ~40 min from Center City; endless indoor strolling.
A matinee movie
Every multiplex is cranked ice-cold. A midday show at AMC, Regal or the Ritz theaters is the cheapest, laziest air-conditioning in the city.
An escape room
Air-conditioned puzzle adventures like Escape the Room Philly and Olde City Escape Games — an hour of cold-air teamwork, perfect for a group riding out the peak heat.
